Norm Hatch was a Marine Corp Combat Cameraman and landed on Tarawa to document the attack on the island for the Marine Corp. The Battle of Tarawa was fought on 20-23 November 1943 between the United States and Japan at the Tarawa Atoll in the Gilbert Islands, and was part of Operation Galvanic, the U.S. invasion of the Gilberts. Over 1000 US Marines were killed and over 2100 were wounded. The Japanese had just under 4700 killed and ...

US Navy UDT at Peleliu - The Tarawa invasion pointed to a few problems with the lack of reconnaissance of the tide levels, reef and shoreline prior to the landings on Tarawa. Prior to the attack on Peleliu US Navy UDT men conducted such a mission ...

How hot was it inside these tanks?
The aptly named "Greatest Generation;" We, the People owe them our very freedom.
Surreal.
Excellent footage!!❤ Did the japs have tunnels for cover from the arty? You'd think a couple of barrages would soften that island up considerably but it sounds like it didn't have enough effect?
My late grand uncle fought at Peleliu, Biak, the Philipines and later in the Korean War in an army Sherman. Can't help but wonder if any of these tanks might have him in it. Thanks for posting.
Just excellent
Tim Waltz in war 😂
Yes, correct. He would be the one on the front, leading the troops.
ANOTHER IN THE NIGHT IN THE DARK...EXCERSIZE! BY THE VERY SAME INBRED SEED!
This was a fierce battle that many people were not aware of it happening. Semper Fi from an old Marine Sergeant who served 1973-1977
Useless battle. Should never have happened. Waste of good men.
Excellent videos thank you
What happened to the sound?
Thanks for watching the video. The music I used I was informed was ok to use based on the web page of the musician, well RUclips said someone made a claim and that section was silenced. The CC is still there so you get the information. Again thanks for watching, I hope you have had a chance to watch some of our other videos.
I'm pretty sure that's the Indianapolis sporting her dazzle scheme @1:08 and she shows up in a few wide shots later on.
Thought Japs were beaten for once and for all at Midway? That's what they said!
Is this what Pelelu looks like? Okinawa or N. Luzon?
Thanks for watching the video. The video is on Peleliu, the first section is the attack on the Horseshoe, next is the airfield and the remaining is areas around Peleliu.. Again thanks for watching, I hope you have had a chance to watch some of our other videos.
@SFRProductions Thanks for covering this and setting me straight. Regardless a chilling campaign. Thanks!
Dear RUclips: Nobody gives one sh*t about your adds. Your shameful attempts to make us watch them are reprehensible at best.
AMAZING
Thanks for watching the video and making a comment.
Incredible films. Way better with no sound.
I usually watch these muted as well
So mute you fool
Always a balancing act when building a video some people like the background music others do not. This video the background music is very quiet. Thanks for watching the video.
@@SFRProductions Personal preference I suppose, and painless to address on my end. Glad you are posting these.
@@SFRProductions I meant it not as a criticism, just a comment! I really do appreciate these uploads, it absolutely takes my breath away. Thank you.
Impressive down range filming.
i see the white things flying and for a moment i think 'drones'.
😊 what were they 'birds'? Or paper from the shell wrappings? Please let me know sir if you know. Thank you and have a good day and a better tomorrow.
First time I saw the film I was thinking drone also since I use one when out filming but it was 1944 so taking a very close look it is birds flying around that area. Thanks for watching the video.
this is amazing. Ive been there twice, and watched hundreds of video, but this is so well done
Thanks for watching and making a comment.
very well done. I have been there twice and only in july. its soo much nicer all green like that
Thank you.
I know I'm late to the party. However, my great uncle served on the USS Honolulu at Peleliu, and I believe she provided shore bombardment with her 15 - 6" "machine gun" main batteries. I think I can make her out in a couple of the scenes. The Honolulu also bombarded Leyte in preparation of General MacArthurs' return to the Philippines. That's where my great uncle and 63 of his fellow sailors lost their lives as the Honolulu was struck by a Japanese torpedo plane. Due to the shallow waters, she did not sink, and the ship survived to be repaired, and serve once again. Thanks for posting the footage!
Thanks for watching. Sorry about your great uncle. I interviewed a veteran that was on the USS HONOLULU during the Pearl Harbor attack.
My Uncle Jim landed on the Canal Aug 7, 1942, with the 1st Marine Combat Engineers. Was there until relieved in late December, early January. Besides a little shrapnel and a good bout of malaria, plus being shell shocked he came out no worse for the ware and tare.
Thanks for watching, I am heading back to Guadalcanal this November to see what else I can find and film.
My dad who was a navy radioman on a sbd. He was put in s marine uniform and sent on on the 11th wave. He was to set up communications to land navy air craft. That never happened and he ended up spending the night in a pile of dead marines. Also there is a little island they burn all the bodies. They called it fly island. He said he will never forget the smell.
Your Dad must have incredible stories from the Pacific, the Greatest Generation. Thanks for watching and making a comment. I am heading back to Tarawa this November the 81st Anniversary. Again thanks for watching.
The Birdcage is a very haunted place. Very active.
If they're going to reenact the Gold Dollar/Margarita clash, at least do it with more believable actresses.
I'm sorry but I completely disagree with Henderson Field being renamed. They should have left that name in place.
Great research wonderful narrating thank you. Las Vegas Nevada
I guess my question is, why didn’t folks hear anything about this on the radio? Like you would think that a natural reaction after seeing all the NG that someone would go to see if anything was being broadcasted on the radio. What about TV coverage?
Very cool. I have a friend whos' cousin (I think) was in the 321st. I've been to Angaur twice, beautiful place.
My wife's uncle is a marine who was in this battle, he is celebrating his 100th birthday, big party for him in September!
I ever check out the battlefields on Guam?
I would like to go, in the early 80s our Army plane spent a half day there but never left the airport. Heading to Peleliu for the 80th this September and will be stopping in Guam but not enough time to do much.
@@SFRProductions much battlefields..can't wait for the next upload
Axis smashers
Outstanding storytelling 👍🏼
Thanks for watching and making a comment. I am heading back to Guadalcanal in November to see what else I can discover. Again thanks for watching and I hope you had a chance to watch some of our other videos.
Beautiful sound of the bell ringing.
Thanks for watching and making a comment. I truly enjoy spending time in Sainte-Mere-Eglise.
receives serious damage aft starboard quarter, from suspected German criuser, North Atlantic, casualties,

Hollow Heart
My grandfather escaped from Germany to Australia to hide from the crimes he would have committed I'm a crime
Thankyou America, Thankyou.
I grew up right around the block from Lt. Bonnyman’s house in Santa Fe New Mexico. I remember visiting his grave with MOH citation at the national cemetery there. His body had not been recovered. The grave was empty just had the tombstone. When they found him on Tarawa and repatriated him back to Tennessee they removed his grave marker from the Santa Fe national cemetery.
Thanks for watching and making a comment. I am heading back to Tarawa in November to go back to the bunker and see what else I can discover. Again thanks for watching and I hope you had a chance to watch some of our other videos.
Thanx for this. Really freaking out watching what I have always imagined or viewed in b/w pics. You have a big follower here in Spain🙋♂
Thanks for watching and making a comment. I am heading back to Guadalcanal in November, the terrain is nothing like I expected those ridge lines are incredibly steep. Again thanks for watching and I hope you had a chance to watch some of our other videos.
This footage is incredible. So personal
Unimaginable the horrors these boys had to go through in the pacific campaign. So miss understood by Americans just how fanatical the Japanese were. Cpl months before these boys were on farms in school in loving homes getting yelled at by ma. Next thing there on some god for saken island 🏝️ in unbearable heat just trying to survive second to second. Fighting an enemy had zero regard for life .Ya think it effected them mentally and emotionally the ones fortunate enough to survive. God Bless ❤🙏🏼🇺🇸 All Vets
Thanks for watching and making a comment. The Pacific veterans have stories that are just unreal. I am going to be posting more color films in the next few days.
Horrific war away of the civilozation. No rules, just brutality. Excellent film.
I went to high school with a friend who’s father was in the first wave of Marines landing on Tarawa.
'Ohio' by Neil Young is a great song about this.
That poor Sherman 😢
My dad also was there. 18 years old, BAR assistant, White Beach. All he ever mentioned was the heat, the thirst, the cries for water, and that the coral was like a reflective oven, and you couldn't dig very far enough to get cover because it just filled the hole back in.
Thanks for watching and making a comment. The Greatest Generation, please share more information about your dad. I am heading back to Peleliu this September for the 80th and will be filming the ceremony on White Beach 2. Again thanks for watching and I hope you had a chance to watch some of our other videos.
Overall good, but the clip at 4:46 is the landing at Iwo Jima not Pelilu
Thanks for watching and making a comment. Sometimes the film reels at the National Archives bunch lots of locations together. I have several hours of Iwo Jima, Tarawa and Peleliu footage that I have copied, along with a few thousand photos. Again thanks for watching and I hope you had a chance to watch some of our other videos.
